Influenced by the ‘clean eating’ movement, clean beauty has emerged as the logical next step for the conscious consumer. Following public demand for a more transparent, honest approach to the ingredients that go into our beauty products, an increasing number of luxury beauty brands are turning their attention towards eco-friendly skincare. Moving past the days of strangely scented balms and lumpy packaging, the new wave of  botanical brands are positioned to replace the synthetics on our shelves. These natural, plant-based blends strip beauty down to its purest form, creating potent, non-toxic blends that are kind to the body and the earth.

In conversation with herbalist and co-founder of Earth Tu Face, Sarah Buscho, we have created an introductory guide to clean skincare. Creating products made entirely from plant-based, food grade ingredients her collections are made with a commitment to eliminating toxins from our skincare and to sustaining the future of our planet. The following guide outlines her philosophy and includes an A-Z of key ingredients along with exclusive Earth Tu Face home recipes.

Sarah Buscho, Founder, Earth Tu Face

I just didn’t find anything on the market that captured clean beauty with responsibility to the planet.

What is Clean Beauty?

‘It has wide sweeping meanings but, for me, it is a combination of using natural ingredients that are effective for the skin and are responsible for the planet. At Earth Tu Face we consider everything from the product to the packaging, we look at the plant populations, how they are cultivated and we make sure to use aerial parts of the plant so we don’t have to kill the plant in the process.

Overall, I wouldn’t feel comfortable making a short-term product that leaves its bi-products on the planet forever. We have to remember that we live in a closed system, the things we use end up in our air, our houses and our waterways. People have gone from eating clean, beauty rituals, clean household products and I think it’s great that we are collectively making that big shift but, I don’t think the wave has crested yet. We don’t want to leave a blazing trail of trash behind us; it’s not beautifying the planet, it’s not beautifying ourselves and it doesn’t make any sense.’

Getting  to know Your ingredients

and your skin

‘As a herbalist I get inspiration from the plants around me, noticing how they smell and watching how things naturally blend together. I never planned on it being a big part of my life, it was just about having fun and asking questions so, I would say start with reading about the ingredients and getting to know your skin.

Our skin changes throughout the year, as we age and dependent on the climate that we live in. Start with maybe four ingredients and then go from there. Base oils are probably the most important thing to start out with, like olive oil vs sesame oil,  coconut vs almond. Learn what works for you and how it should be handled. For example, if you choose grapeseed oil, learn about how it has to be refrigerated, how long it lasts and that it’s really in its best form when it’s cold-pressed.’

Sarah Buscho’s guide to the natural ingredients you need to start your journey towards clean, honest skincare

  1. Blue Chamomile

Blue Chamomile excels at reducing inflammation and calming redness. It provides deep nourishment to the cells and delivers rich antioxidants, a proven component in combating aging of the skin.

  2. Cocoa Butter

Richly moisturizing, Cocoa Butter softens and protects even the driest of skin. It is a premier remedy for fading stretch marks and smoothing lines.

  3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a richly hydrating natural sunscreen. Being high in antioxidants, it prevents destructive free-radical activity (known to be the primary cause of aging). It lessens skin spots and other blemishes caused by aging and overexposure to sunlight.

  4. Honey

A humectant that aids the skin in obtaining and retaining moisture. It is nourishing to cells and naturally antimicrobial. It softens the skin and helps to prevent and clear blemishes.

  5. Lavender

Excels at fading and preventing scarring. It is especially beneficial for healing burns, blemishes and general skin irritations. The soothing aroma calms and reduces stress.

  6. Rose

Rose petals are cooling and astringent. They tone and tighten the skin while helping diminish redness and blotchy areas.

  7. Safflower

Safflower oil is a rich, hydrating oil that is used as a moisturizer. It nourishes cells while providing a protective barrier to prevent water loss from the skin.

  8. Sea Buckthorn Oil

Sea Buckthorn is a supreme skin healer and regenerator. It repairs damaged skin, scar tissue, and reduces wrinkles. It is known to strengthen the epidermis and the body’s cell membranes.

  9. Sesame

Sesame oil is a rich, nourishing oil that is suitable for most skin types. It provides effective hydration for even the driest skin. It is detoxifying to the skin surface and rich in vitamin E and minerals. It acts as natural sunscreen.

  10. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects and repairs your skin. It also preserves our all natural formulas keeping them stable for years. Antioxidants are agents that neutralize the oxidant effect of free radicals, which are molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. When your skin is exposed to environmental pollutants and the sun’s ultraviolet rays, your body can produce free radicals. Free radicals are atoms with an uneven number of electrons, and when they form inside your body, they steal electrons from healthy cells like the ones that make up your skin. This can cause a damaging chain reaction, and that’s where antioxidants like vitamin E come in and repair cells.

Sustainable practice

our health & the environment

Sarah Buscho, Founder, Earth Tu Face

Change comes down to a series of small decisions that we make everyday.

‘We are really in a time that we have to think about the earth. We we need to think about the environment and to make changes to the way we are living. This change comes down to a series of small decisions that we make everyday. That concept, is part of the brand, to reconnect people back to the earth- there is a lot we as humans can learn by looking at nature.

The average person uses something like 12 beauty products a day. These products are often loaded with harsh chemicals that are absorbed into our bodies, increasing our toxic load. It really isn’t necessary, we have a wealth of natural resources to draw from and get the same (or better) results from. I want to support something that I think are good for our planet. It may be lofty, because maybe the answer is just that clean skincare it is a more healthy option than using a synthetic chemical on your skin everyday. So many people have allergic reactions and skin problems, and increasingly these problems are caused by environmental pollution, in your food and your beauty.’
